This is the book that keeps me company: Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry.
It is a mellow book that paints a peaceful picture of relationships formed in a small town. Retold from the point of view of an elderly man reflecting on his life of wandering then settling into the life of the town barber.
I recommend it for those of you who appreciate books that have a slow meandering story and rich text.
This furry guy also keeps me company:
His name is Hobbes. Less fierce but just as diplomatic as the Hobbes in "Calvin and Hobbes"
He found his way "mysteriously" onto my bed the other night
(or because a piece of bread was thrown onto my bed by Jim Harley)
...I didn't have the guts to kick him off, so there he remained.
